Scottish Highland Football League Review

Written by Sean McAngus.

THE Scottish Highland Football League kicked off with an entertaining weekend. The matches had everything a fan wanted with lots of superb goals, crunching tackles and several bookings.
Highland League champions Cove Rangers had to make an epic comeback to beat Huntly. In the first half Neale Davidson and Daniel Booth scored goals for Huntly to give them a surprising lead. Were Huntly going to upset last season’s champions? Huntly’s dreams of beating Cove Rangers were shattered when goals from Jamie McLaughlin and Ryan Stott secured Kevin Tindal’s men a point at Allan Park.

Big Inverness giants Brora Rangers topped the league after there 5-1 thrashing of a weak Clachnacuddin side. Former Caley Thistle defender Ross Tokely got on the score sheet with a fantastic header from 15 yards. The other scorers for Brora Rangers were Steven Mackay and Richie Hart. They were just above Inverurie Locos on goal differences. Inverurie Locos ran out 4-0 winners over Strathspey Thistle. Neil Gauld opened the scoring for Inverurie. Then other great goals by Dean Donaldson, Greig Mitchell and an own goal by Willie Ridgers secured the easy victory for Locos.

Fraserburgh beat this seasons highland league title favorite Nairn County by one goal. Thanks to a great second half finish from Mark Cowie. Meanwhile last season’s runners up Formartine United defeated Lossiemouth 3-0. Thanks to Cammy Keith’s hat trick on his debut. Wick Academy had the upper hand by beating Buckie Thistle 2-0. From two great goals from Gary Manson and Richard Macadie. While Forres overcame Rothes by the same score line. Andrew Fraser and Scott Lawrie being the scorers.

Turriff United beat Fort William 4-2 thanks to a first half hat trick from Gary Harris. With Fort William’s new signing Gordon MacCarroll scoring twice. Meanwhile Deveronvale outclassed ten men Keith by 4-1. Martin Charlesworth was on target twice for the Vale. Keith player Jonny Smith was send off for a bad challenge on Craig Cowie.

The Highland League’s opening weekend was very entertaining with Cove Rangers making an epic comeback to draw with Huntly and lots of goals being scored at the game between Fort William and Turriff United. Hopefully the other fixtures coming up in the Highland League are going to be as exciting as the past weekend.

During the week two Aberdeenshire cup games were played. First with Turriff United who defeated Keith by 4-1. Gary Harris who scored a Hat trick at the weekend for Turriff scored the opener. Paul Young scored a great goal on the 66 minute to double Turriff’s lead. Before Gary McGowan added the third goal a couple of minutes later. Sean Keith pulled a goal back for the visitors. Before Ben Alan secured the victory for Turriff with an amazing strike. Meanwhile in the other Aberdeenshire Cup game on Wednesday Deveronvale were beaten by Buckie Thistle. Lewis Mackinnon scored the penalty to win the game. In the North of Scotland Cup Forres thrashed Lossiemouth by three goals. Lossiemouth’s Kevin Flett was sent off for a bad tackle. Clachnacuddin came back from three goals against Wick Academy but Wick scored in the 85 minute to win the match.
This week was entertaining with some great cup games.  Also this week was the Scottish Cup round ties with some great ties such as Clachnacuddin versus Deveronvale and Inverurie Locos versus Burntisland Shipyards.
