Glasgow ready to host Champions League clash
Glasgow City vs. Valur Reykjavik Preview: City want to put Valur on Ice
By MATTHEW HAROLD
GLASGOW City head coach Eddie Wolecki Black is looking for his side to take something to Iceland.
Scotland's sole Champions league representatives tonight host Icelandic outfit Valur Reykjavik in the last 32 of the competition, with Black's side the underdogs to progress.
The City boss spoke about the importance of a positive first leg result, in order to give his side every chance.
“I think we’ve got to be in the game," he said. "As long as we are still in the tie at the end, we’ve got to make sure that we’re competitive over 90 minutes on Thursday night and make sure that the tie’s still alive.
“It’s the fulfilment of all the hard work last season that the team have put in.
“I think the key thing is that we play our own way and our own style and people find us entertaining, so there is a good possibility we’ll make it a very good game.”
He also praised his players, who have full time jobs, saying of their commitment: “These girls have given everything, they’ve given up social life and missing out on family events that are very important to them to make sure that their there for their teammates.”
The Petershill Park side’s vice-captain Leanne Ross also spoke about the sacrifices the side have to make.
"I don’t think it’s about sacrifice, we do it for the love of the game and it’s down to the training at the club, that we get the rewards from that.”
She added: “That’s what you want to do; you want to play at the highest level, so for us as a team it’s amazing to get so far.
“I think this is the best standard we’ve had in this country and I think it’s testament to the likes of Eddie coming into the women’s game and lifting the standard the training, we’re training more often and we’re reaping the rewards for that.
“We try not to compare ourselves to the men, because we don’t get the same level of publicity as them, but what we’re doing at the moment is fantastic for us and helping to raise the profile as best as we can.”
