Alternative Scottish League: season 2011/12
Last updated May 16th.
Handicaps are based on how many points each side finished above the second bottom side the previous season. St Mirren, who were the second bottom side in 2010/11, therefore start on 0 points, as do newly promoted Dunfermline. Hibs were four points above St Mirren last season, therefore they begin on minus four points, and that's how it works for every team right up to the defending champions Rangers who start on -60 virtue of finishing 60 points above second bottom last term.
The goal difference handicap is worked out by looking at the team who had the worst goal difference (not counting the team who were relegated). In the case of season 2010/11, that side was again St Mirren with minus 24 - so they start at 0, with Hibs on -2, all the way up to Celtic who are -87.
The thinking behind the league is that if every team picked up the same amount of points as they did in the previous season, everyone would finish level. Therefore, the aim of the league table should be that the most improved side on last season should win the league.
